Windows Media Center "Extender Not Found" Message
(too old to reply)

I have been trying to hook up my Xbox 360 as an extender for the last two
days now, with no success. I have opened every port on both windows and
macafee firewalls, tried connecting with both firewalls disabled, ran a
system restore to factory defaults, completely uninstalled firewalls, totally
uninstalled and reintalled vista, windows media center, and windows media
player 11, tried running a direct cable from pc to 360, and nothing works.
The 360 is connected to xbox live through my router, so I know it is on the
network. Ive tried all of the troubleshooting steps on ms sites but they dont
work. If anyone knows whats going on with this please help, cause i'm about
to bust this ms POS system. So much for spending $1500+ on something that
cant even connect with other ms brand products (mostly what I bought it for).
When I hit the media center button in the media blade of the 360, it gives
me the setup key; hit continue and it says go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup; when I
go there it redirects to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/pcsetup/MCEVista.htm; the
window at the top of this site says "Cannot Connect the Xbox 360 console to
This Computer"
When I run test media connection on the 360 it fails at the pc selected.
Ive tried dell support, microsoft support, and xbox support numbers and they
all dont know or redirect me to someone else who tries to make me do a bunch
of troubleshooting tips that Ive already done about 30 times each now. I may
not be a computer programmer, but im not retarded either - TROBLESHOOTING
ISNT WORKING! So if anyone has an idea please help, otherwise check ebay for
an XPS and a 360.

im running:
Dell XPS 410 with Vista Home Premium
Wired Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router
Windows Media Center and Media Player 11
MacAfee Security Center Firewall/ Windows firewall (NOT at the same time)

First, you need to check a few things. Sorry if these are things you've
already been asked to do, but first things first.

1. On the Vista Home Premium PC, open the Network and Sharing Center and
make sure "Network discovery" is ON
2. Make sure the XBox 360 shows upon the PC's Network Map. You can view
this in the Network and Sharing Center, then cliding on "View full map".

If both of the above are OK, then the connector should be able to connect.
How are you getting to the extender setup in Media Center? Does a systray
notification tell you the Xbox is found, or do you manually browse (in Media
Center) to Settings/Extender/Add Extender? Either way should work, but I
usually do the later. There, you can enter the Setup Key that's currently
displayed on the Xbox 360, and they should connect.

Please let me know if this helps at all.

Network discovery is on, and the xbox 360 shows up on the network map's
expanded view. I've tried connecting about thirty times, and a systray
notification has only popped up 2 or three times. When I clicked on it and
tried to connect I got a system connection error message. Every other time I
have gotten an extender not found message.

In addition to the Windows Firewall, if you're using the McAfee firewall,
you need various ports opened.

I have been having the same problem with my PC/XBOX360, it looks like we're
using the same router, have you tried a different one? I can't figure out
any other solution, it's like the XBOX and PC can't see each other even
though they both have internet access.
